You Think That's Funny?

My father once said to me "The truest words have often been said in jest." When he first quoted that to me, he credited it to Will Rogers, the old west orator who more or less invented the concept of Stand-Up Comedy.

However, being the fanatic for "the facts" as it were, I looked up the quote on Ye Olde Google to make sure. I found the quote to be attributed to everybody from Mark Twain to L. Ron Hubbard. One or two of them stated it as being "an old Scottish Proverb," and I find that when a phrase such as that is so widespread and timeless as to lack an inarguable origin, the "proverb" status is usually the safest bet.

Wherever it came from, it firmly came to mind to me today when I came across this little nugget from those ingenious masters of modern satire, The Onion:
